Applications are now open for the CSIRO Aquaculture SME Program, an eight‑week online initiative aimed at helping Australian small and medium‑sized enterprises move early‑stage ideas toward viable research and development plans.

The program, part of CSIRO’s Innovate to Grow series, targets companies developing solutions in aquaculture‑related fields such as breeding, animal health, nutrition, production systems, digital tools, sustainability, packaging, and Indigenous‑led ventures. It is free to join and runs for eight weeks, with classes beginning in September.
The deadline for applications is 16 August 2026. Since its launch in 2020, more than 900 SMEs have participated, according to the agency’s records. The initiative seeks to address a common obstacle: many businesses have promising concepts but lack clarity on the research needed to advance them.
How the program works
Participants are matched with CSIRO researchers who help outline a practical research pathway. Dr Mat Cook, Aquaculture Research Director at CSIRO, explained that “whether it’s breeding, animal health, nutrition or new production systems, good ideas often stall because businesses aren’t sure what evidence they need or where to start with R&D.”
The format is entirely online, allowing companies across Australia to join without travel.

Rebecca Parlett, director of Bio Tribute Systems, completed a previous round. She said the program helped her “clarify the real status of my innovation and better understand the R&D pathway required to progress it.” Parlett added that the experience reshaped her view of the project, showing that it involved regulatory, funding, and validation challenges beyond simple product development.
While the program’s benefits are clear, it remains a modest offering. The limited duration means participants must be prepared to continue their work independently after the eight weeks. Nonetheless, the structured guidance can be a useful catalyst for early‑stage ventures.
