Abdul Samad Rabiu receives $81m Bombardier jet

Abdul Samad Rabiu has taken delivery of a Bombardier Global 8000 jet valued at about $81 million, expanding his corporate aviation holdings. The aircraft, signed for on December 4, 2025, joins BUA Group’s existing fleet, which includes a Bombardier Challenger 350 and a Global 6500. Rabiu announced the acquisition on Instagram, thanking God for the milestone. The jet is part of a broader strategy to strengthen BUA Group’s international presence across sectors like cement, food processing, and real estate.

The Bombardier Global 8000 offers a maximum range of 8,000 nautical miles, enabling nonstop travel between major global cities. Its design includes four distinct living areas, allowing for flexible cabin layouts suited to work, dining, or sleeping. The aircraft also claims the fastest operating speeds in its class, reducing travel times on long-haul routes. Bombardier highlights these features as key selling points, though analysts note the jet’s operational costs could be steep.

Annual operating expenses for the Global 8000 are estimated between $1.8 million and $2.9 million, depending on usage and maintenance. These costs include crew salaries, fuel, and regular inspections. While BUA Group has not disclosed specific figures for this aircraft, industry benchmarks suggest ownership of such high-end jets often requires significant ongoing investment beyond the initial purchase price.

Rabiu’s net worth has surged to $17.5 billion as of June 2026, a 73% increase from the start of the year. Much of this growth stems from BUA Cement’s strong performance, with revenue reaching N1.2 trillion in 2025. The company’s share price rose 135% over the past year, driven by investor confidence and expansion efforts. BUA Foods, another major BUA Group entity, also contributes to Rabiu’s wealth as Nigeria’s second-largest pasta producer.

Beyond aviation, BUA Group controls nearly 98% of BUA Cement and 93% of BUA Foods through direct and indirect holdings. The conglomerate’s reach spans infrastructure, mining, and real estate, positioning it as a major player in Nigeria’s economy. Rabiu’s recent jet acquisition shows his growing influence, both domestically and internationally, as BUA Group continues to diversify its operations.

While the Global 8000 adds to BUA Group’s fleet, it also raises questions about the balance between luxury assets and operational sustainability. The jet’s capabilities align with Rabiu’s ambitions to position BUA Group as a global competitor, but the financial commitments involved are considerable. For now, the aircraft remains a symbol of the group’s expanding footprint and Rabiu’s personal wealth trajectory.
